ARLINGTON – The North Texas cross country teams gave its underclassmen a chance to shine and the men’s team finished second Saturday morning at the UTA Gerald Richey Invitational.

The Mean Green continues to show how deep this year’s roster is after the men’s team came in second. Only five runners competed at the UTA Gerald Richey Invitational composed of all underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores).

“I was pleased with the performances of our top three Tim (Jones), Hayden (Murphy), and Zach (Kirkland),” cross country coach Stefanie Slekis said. “Our goal was to get three in the top 10 collegiately and we did that. We kept the same workout heading into the meet. It was a great race for Cassidy (Adams) this week after finishing inside the top 20.”

The women’s team started the 5k meet, sophomore Cassidy Adams led the team with a 17th place finish with a personal best time of 19:26.1. Freshman Jennifer White was 26th touching in at 19:48.4. and sophomore Baylee Nelson finished 34th at 20:02.8. Freshmen Tori Valka came in 37th with a time of 20:14.3 and Kacie Jo Corbin completed the scoring in 51st at 21:45.0.

The men’s team finished second overall after freshmen Tim Jones finished sixth with a time of 15:49.9 and Hayden Murphy was eighth at 15:58.1. Sophomore Zach Kirkland came in 12th clocking in at 16:16.6 and classmate Ethan Davis was 20th with a time of 17:01.6. Sophomore Michael Johnson finished the scoring in 30th place at 17:57.1.

The Mean Green will host the Ken Garland Invitational Saturday, Sept. 17 starting at 8 a.m.
