Dan Bruce CD reviewed
The CD "A Single Thread," by guitarist, composer, and recent UNT jazz studies graduate (M.M.) Dan Bruce, was reviewed in Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine, issue 65. Dan's composition "Some Towns" is on the accompanying CD, and notation and tab for the piece is included as a PDF.
From the review:
"Are you ready to step out of the generally conservative world of solo fingerstyle guitar and challenge your boundaries? If so, take a listen to Daniel Bruce. Daniel hails from Dayton, Ohio and currently resides in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. This last December he received his masters in jazz guitar from the prestigious University of North Texas and also released his first project as a leader, titled A Single Thread.
Daniel made his first appearance in Fingerstyle in September of 2004 with his stellar arrangement of the Gershwin classic "Embraceable You." We at Fingerstyle knew upon hearing Daniel for the first time that he was a special talent, and his new project only reinforces that belief.
A Single Thread features seven of Daniel's originals. He is backed by Brian Donohoe (tenor sax), Ken Edwards (trumpet, flugelhorn), Matt Lawless (piano), Scott Trayer (acoustic bass) and Ross Pederson on drums.
Daniel Bruce ranks with the best of the best in the contemporary jazz guitar world."
Here's a youtube clip of "Some Towns" from Dan's master's recital.

News from the Jay Saunders trumpet masterclass
Students of Jay Saunders are studying 3 of New York’s busiest lead trumpet players this semester: Craig Johnson, Tony Kadleck and Frank Greene. Johnson and Greene are also UNT jazz studies exes.
The first masterclass (October 1st) concentrated on Craig Johnson. The students transcribed 3 selections each from a list provided by Craig. Each student then gives a short lecture on the specific aspects of execution and style he observed. He selects one example; the entire class listens to the excerpt while studying the transcription; then the selection is performed by the student-lecturer.
Excerpts were selected from Johnson’s lead playing with: Maynard Ferguson in the early 1990’s; the 4 CD’s he recorded with John Fedchock’s New York Big Band; “Sing, Sing, Sing” with the New York Voices; “Thought Trains” with Mike Holober’s Gotham Jazz Orchestra and the 3 CD’s he recorded with Bill Mobley’s Jazz Orchestra.
Tony Kadleck’s lead playing is next. Anyone in the area is invited to observe the masterclass – to be scheduled in early November. Contact Jay Saunders at jsaunders@music.unt.edu for more information.

Academia and Stress
I am writing this to students who are currently at UNT and those who think they may come to school here. I have noticed something. Some of my students have glazed over eyes and seem up tight a lot. There is a significant amount of stress upon university students in a program that demands excellence and has a history of outstanding performers. UNT has tremendous competition for placement in the best lab bands and for undergraduates and graduate students the comparison between students gets intense. "I don't play as good as so-and-so." "I play better than so-and-so, why did he/she get in a better band than me?" These internal negative or inflated positive outlooks become hard to deal with. Ultimately, when you combine that with a heavy academic load, recitals and gigs many nights a week and typically not enough sleep you have a recipe for an emotional crash.
I have a suggestion. Don't take yourself and school so seriously. Look at music like a game. When I was a child, I remember friends coming to my house and asking, "Can Freddie come out and play?" My best friends and I would make up wonderful imaginary games: sailing small boats down a rain swollen ditch and tossing rocks at them seeing if our bombs could sink them, hide and seek in the twilight hours, endless basketball games. And it was fun! Really fun! I think that is why we call it playing music.
Wasn't music really fun when you first realized you could make stuff up? No one bothered to stop and criticize you because you blew a ii-V or your time was not happening. You just had fun playing your instrument. Do you feel like you have lost that in the rigorous academic approach to music?
You owe it to yourself to regain control of your music. I don't mean that you should not practice and strive for mastery. But, when it doesn't go like you thought it should, you have a bad musical day, someone criticizes you, you stop and think about what is important and what is not. What you can change and what you cannot. Some criticism is helpful, if it is not, throw it away. Just shake it off. If you are off your musical game for a moment, think about this: it is not that important. Music may cause people to forget their troubles for a moment, but it will not cure their cancer, heal their marriage problems, save them from an improvised explosive device in Iraq or any number of terrible things. In the scope of life, a bad day in music would be a great day for someone who lives under a bridge.
It is in your thinking that you create your own life. Ease up on yourself and everyone around you. Enjoy the day while you are able. Count your blessings, look for the silver lining, enjoy the glass half-full.
If you cannot do it on your own, maybe you need to talk to someone who will listen to you. Or, if you cannot get out of the slump, maybe you need to talk to a counselor.
Finally, don't say yes to everything. Take some time to read a book for enjoyment, get some exercise on a regular basis, eat good and healthy food and try to get regular amounts of sleep. Living in constant "jet-lag" is not good for your mental and emotional well being.
One more thing: you are important, you have meaning, you are loved, you have something to say and something to add to this world. Live life with meaning and have fun doing it!
