Graduate Admissions

Graduate applicants typically begin the admissions process 6-18 months prior to their first semester. Refer to the following steps as you prepare to apply to graduate school at UNT.

Before You Apply:

• Learn more about programs and request specific information
• Learn admission, application fee and supporting documentation requirements for the Toulouse Graduate School and from your departmental website
• Check program application dates and deadlines
• Review financial aid and scholarship options
• Take a free graduate tour of campus
• Connect with your graduate advisor or key faculty and discuss graduate school options

Application Process:

PROGRAM DEADLINES VARY. CONTACT YOUR ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Register and prepare for entrance exams (if required): GRE, GMAT or MAT

Complete the program-specific required entrance exams and submit your scores to UNT’s Office of Graduate Admissions.*

*Some programs may provisionally admit students for one semester prior to submission of standardized test scores. Others have requirements that substitute for test scores. Talk to your program advisor for details.

Complete the graduate school application online and pay the $75 non-refundable application fee (Your completed application will be processed by the Toulouse Graduate School and reviewed by your academic program).

McNair Scholars: UNT will pay the application fee upon receipt of the request for Admission Application Fee Waiver form or letter from your McNair director. Please email the completed form to gradadmission@unt.edu or fax it to 940-565-2032.

Obtain transcripts, letters of recommendation and other supporting documents (see “Requesting transcripts and submitting other supporting documents” below for more information).

Submit program-specific application and documentation by department deadline.

Apply for scholarships, assistantships and fellowships.

General scholarship application priority date**: March 1

Priority dates for other awards vary.

Apply for financial aid at fafsa.gov.

FAFSA priority date**: March 15

**Applying by priority dates affords you the most options for admission and financial support. Many programs will still consider your application after these dates. Ask your department for more information.

After you've been admitted:

• Meet with your advisor to determine course options
• Attend a graduate orientation session in person or online
• Register for classes

International applicants:

• Review admissions instructions
• Allow 7-8 months for your application prior to registration dates
• Register for international graduate orientation

Requesting transcripts and submitting other supporting documents:

Official transcripts are required from every college or university you have attended and must arrive by the application deadline. The transcripts must show you have earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution (or equivalent).

Contact the colleges and universities you have attended about their processes for providing official transcripts. If you already have a degree from the University of North Texas, you are not required to provide your UNT transcript to the Toulouse Graduate School. We will be able to obtain this from the registrar's office for you.

Programs may require other supporting documents such as personal statements, letters of reference, auditions or portfolios. Send additional program-specific application materials directly to your department. Check with your department advisor for more information on additional required documents and where to send them.

International applicants may need to provide additional materials. See more details on international admissions.

GPA requirement for UNT consideration:

Graduate applicants to UNT are evaluated holistically, based on specific departmental and program requirements. In the past, successful candidates usually have met certain GPA minimum requirements:

• 3.00 GPA in the undergraduate degree for admission to the master's program
• 3.50 GPA in the undergraduate degree for direct admission to doctoral programs
• 3.50 GPA in master’s-level studies for admission to doctoral programs
