Ms. Jessie Niu is a native of China. She speaks Mandarin Chinese and three other Chinese dialects. Jessie received her Bachelor’s degree in English from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China in 1999, and a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of North Texas in 2012. Before she came to the U.S., Jessie taught English as a foreign language to adults, college students and corporate trainees for almost a decade. In 2004, she earned her Trinity Certification in TESOL in England. As part of her professional foreign language teaching experience, Jessie has also taught Chinese as a foreign language at the college level for several years, both in China and at UNT. Jessie’s other professional experience includes her role as a translator and coordinator for international programs at Shanghai Grand Theatre and the Canadian Consulate General in Shanghai, China.  

Jessie joined the UNT College of Music in Fall 2014. She works as one of the four academic counselors for undergraduate students, helping them make their class schedules each semester, and providing resources and guidance for the students to make satisfactory academic progress toward the completion of their degrees. In addition, Jessie also serves as the liaison for all international students in the college, assisting them with immigration related questions and requests, such as CPT, OPT, and I-20.

Jessie is passionate about cross-cultural education and communications through foreign language teaching and learning, work and study abroad, and international travels. She is also enthusiastic about utilizing modern technologies to expand the resources and accessibilities for education. In her spare time, Jessie enjoys singing and playing the guitar, attending concerts, watching movies and documentaries, as well as biking and hiking.
