Oklahoma has ‘likely’ first tornado of 2018, ends record

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A National Weather Service official said a “likely” tornado in northwestern Oklahoma ended the state’s record start to the year without a twister.

But meteorologist John Pike noted on Wednesday, May 2, the funnel cloud captured on video by KOCO-TV near Buffalo, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) northwest of Oklahoma City, had not been confirmed as a tornado.

Harper County’s emergency management director said no injuries were reported and the only known damage was a tree that was blown down onto a road.

The previous record for the latest, first tornado at the start of a year in Oklahoma was April 26, set in 1962.

Pike said more severe weather — including tornadoes — was possible with strong storms developing mid-afternoon Wednesday in western Oklahoma and moving north and east.
