Continuing with its Black History Month themed events, the University of North Texas at Dallas hosted the “Black Girls Talk” event recently. Led by Alounda Joseph (Director of Graduate Admissions) and Shaniece Miller (Assistant Director of Graduate Admissions), the forum featured women of color from across campus communicating with one another about issues, trends and self-image.
“We do have a lot of African American and brown employees that work here, especially women,” said Miller. “So, we wanted to put on an event for us to come together that would celebrate Black History Month to make sure that we’re encouraging and empowering everyone working here.”
The theme throughout the event was “Standing in Your Truth”, which encouraged and inspired all women to truly stand in their truth, beauty and excellence by standards they have set for themselves contrary to what society says. Carrying on this theme was the “Women of Wisdom” panel of Betty Stewart (Provost), Veronica Ewing (Admissions Processor), Judith Nix (Administrative Assistant to Dr. Constance Lacy) and Brenda Robertson (Head Librarian).
“Having my mom in the audience, but then having the women of wisdom as well, was my favorite part about today,” added Miller. “I don’t believe that we can go forward if we don’t hear their voices and also the voices of women from the past.”
