Overview of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) at UNT
UNT is committed to instilling in our community of scholars a shared understanding and adherence to the principles of responsible conduct of research. The “UNT Plan for Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)” was developed to assist UNT researchers in improving their awareness of RCR topics and to address training requirements of the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the United States Department of Agriculture. These agencies specify that proposals for funding reference the institution’s plan for training in RCR topics such as:
- Research Misconduct
- Data Acquisition, Management, Sharing, and Ownership
- Conflict of Interest
- Collaborative Research
- Publication Practices and Responsible Authorship
- Mentoring
- Peer Review
- Care and Use of Animals in Research
- Human Subjects Research

Navigating the IRB Process Monday, January 29, 2018, Willis 443, 1pm-3pm This workshop will provide information on how to prepare a human subjects application for submission, what steps a researcher should take to submit (and how the steps differ for students and full-time faculty), and will help prepare you to get your research protocol approved, such as discussions on informed consent, documentation requirements, recruitment practices, and the different levels of review for human subjects research. |

Collaborative Research Friday, March 2, 2018, Willis 443, 1pm-3pm More often than not, research involves a team of researchers working together, such as the lead investigator, co-investigators, graduate student assistants, or even working with a researcher from another institution. In this workshop, we will discuss some of the different forms of collaboration, why collaboration is important, and some of the issues you may encounter. |

Responsible Authorship and Publication Monday, March 19, 2018, Willis 443, 1pm-3pm Getting published is a standard mark of academic achievement. It can therefore easily fall prey to arguments related to authorship, predatory journals, and peer review problems. This workshop will talk about some of the modern problems associated with online journals, why publication is still important in the academic world, and concerns on the ethics of authorship. |

Current Practices: Animal and Human Subjects Friday, April 27, 2018, Willis 443, 1pm-3pm Some regulations related to human subjects research will be changing in the near future, and this workshop will discuss some of those changes and how that may affect new and extant research protocols. We will also go over current procedures for submitting animal and human research protocols. |

Export Control Tuesday, May 1, 2018, Willis 443, 1pm-3pm Export controls are federal statutes and regulations that govern how certain information, technologies, and commodities can be transmitted overseas to anyone, including U.S. citizens, or to foreign nationals in the U.S. This workshop will discuss these regulations, and what a researcher needs to do to remain in compliance with the controls. |
