Coaches Caravan 2018

North Texas Athletics is hitting the road to give superfans an inside look at what’s to come for the Mean Green. The 2018 Coaches Carvan events will give attendees the chance to hear athletics news directly from the UNT Athletics Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker and coaches.

This family-friendly celebration features a meet and greet with coaches and players, food, and more Mean Green fun. The dates are set for four locations in DFW, and more locations will be announced, soon.

CMHT Hosts Celebrity Chef Tim Love

The College of Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism is hosted their first annual Celebrity Chef Series featuring restaurateur & TV personality Chef Tim Love. Chef Love specializes in urban western cuisine as the owner and executive chef of Fort Worth restaurants including the White Elephant Saloon, the Love Shack, the Woodshed Smokehouse and Lonesome Dove Western Bistro. Guests are invited to cook, serve and learn side-by-side with Tim Love's culinary team. 

The first series event was held Monday, April 23. All event proceeds will benefit UNT's Hospitality program. Learn more about the event here.

2018 Wingspan Gala Honors UNT Alumni

The spirit of Broadway came to the UNT University Union in March for the 2018 UNT Wingspan gala. The theme was "The Bright Lights of UNT" in honor of special performing guest Tony Award-nominated Broadway performer and UNT alumna Carmen Cusack. 

The Wingspan Gala celebrates excellence, student success and notable alumni and friends. During the event, UNT President Neal Smatresk honored UNT alumni for their success and contribution to the community and university.

Alumnus Jim McNatt was presented with the Presidential Wings of Eagles Award. This award is presented to an alumnus or friend who embodies UNT engagement, generosity and affinity. 

Art history professor Nada Shabout and recent UNT Honors College graduate Krystin Rodriguez were the recipients of the Presidential Excellence Awards. This award is UNT’s most prestigious honor given to current faculty, staff or students.

In addition, UNT President Neal Smatresk presented Cusack with an honorary bachelor's degree to honor her success and musical achievement.

Experience UNT Arts this Spring

UNT Colleges of Music, Visual Arts and Design, and the Department of Dance and Theater produce award-winning students and alumni who are recognized for their artistic talents and work.

This spring, there are many opportunities to explore art and culture with the UNT Arts programs.

The UNT College of Music presents the most concerts of all Texas organizations with over 1,100 events annually. These concerts include performances by 70 student ensembles and internationally recognized faculty, alumni and special artists. Their currently featured performance is the Symphony Orchestra and Grand Chorus led by conductor David Itkin. This will be held April 25 at 8 p.m. at the Murchison Performing Arts Center Winspear Performance Hall. View the full upcoming events calendar here.

The City of Denton is hosting their annual Arts and Jazz Festival on April 27-29. This free, family-friendly festival includes a full schedule of musical performances, art exhibits and activities. Guests will have the opportunity to watch and support UNT musicians during the festival. See the full UNT Showcase Stage performance schedule at here.

In addition, there are reoccurring visual arts exhibits featured at UNT on the Square. UNT on the Square, located in Downtown Denton, is an art gallery that features rotating art exhibits from current students and special local art. Past popular exhibits have included Metalsmithing and Jewelry: Lineagesand Raw Materials: CVAD Faculty and Staff at Work. View a schedule of upcoming exhibitions here.

Mean Green Basketball and Soccer Bring Home Championship Titles

UNT athletics has had an action-packed championship season in men's basketball and women's soccer. 

During March Madness, the Mean Green men's basketball team took home the 2018 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) title after their 88-77 win in Game 3 of the finals. This win marked the first-ever postseason championship for the team and completed their 20-win season. The team will return all five CBI starters, only losing senior Shane Temara. With the start of spring soccer, the defending Conference USA (C-USA) champion women's soccer team played their first match of the season on March 24 against Baylor, ending in a tie of 0-0. This was the first match since winning the NCAA Tournament in November, where the team earned a bid to the tournament for the fifth time in program history.

April UNT News Briefs

Students who enroll in the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science at the University of North Texas for the 2019 fall semester will have the option of combining study in the sciences with study in the arts. The academy, known as TAMS, will offer three new curricular tracks in music, media arts and visual arts and design, adding to its existing curricular tracks of science and computer science and engineering.    

The University of North Texas’ Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) program specialty in local government management ranked first in Texas, eighth nationwide and fifth among public universities in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 list of Best Graduate Schools – category public affairs. 

Workshops are open to musicians ages eight and up.
