UNT is expanding our excellence and innovation to serve the people, communities and businesses of Frisco, Texas, through a 100-acre branch campus designed to serve at least 5,000 students. We’ve served Collin County students since 2010 and today formalized an agreement with the City of Frisco TX - City Hall to provide convenient, innovative access to higher education for decades to come. The addition of a branch campus in Frisco is one of the many ways that UNT will continue to be the university for North Texas. GREAT GRAD: The youngest of 6 kids, I went off at 17 years old on my own dime to college at Central Michigan University in 1992. After 2 years, I came home to care for my mother. I moved to Texas to start a new life when she passed away in 2001. I began working for the UNT Facilities department after starting a family in North Texas. Seeing the students on campus gave me the courage to finish what I had started years prior. My first semester in 2015 was very difficult, as I t...ook 9 hours of classes and had not seen a classroom since 2003. It was also a challenge to balance schoolwork with being a wife and mother of 2 young children. Fortunately, I was able to begin the journey with my best friend who was in law school at A&M in Fort Worth. That changed when she died from an aortic aneurism while studying for her last final. We were to meet up for drinks that night to celebrate completing our 1st semester back at school. Instead, her husband told me of her death. I was overwhelmed with stress and my husband was worried he would lose me to the heavy workload. My boss, AVP of Facilities Dave Reynolds, gave me comfort and courage to continue. He said, “You can’t stop – your kids are watching you. You have to finish, for your kids and for your friend.” At 43, I am finally finishing what I started 26 years ago. I’m proud to walk across the stage for my kids, my husband, my best friend and myself.

“I was faced, more than once, with circumstances that positioned me close to dropping out of college. The support I got from PUSH is something I am unconditionally grateful for," says Jose Whitten, pre-med Biology and Chemistry major. In honor of National #FosterCare Day, we’re celebrating PUSH (Persevere UNTil Success Happens). According to Casey Family Programs, 70% of youth in foster care say they want to go to college, yet only 3% earn a college degree. The PUSH program w...orks to change that statistic by providing a structured, campus-wide network of support to assist foster care alumni in achieving educational success. “Not only do I feel like I'm a part of a family, the greatest reward is when I can give back through community service and speaking about my experiences in order to help others, whether it's kids enduring what I've endured, or foster and adoptive parents trying to better help their children,” says Kiara Powell, Social Work major. We’re #UNTproud of our determined students and hardworking PUSH faculty and staff members!

We’re #UNTproud of the UNT Kristin Farmer Autism Center’s Fredrick Sembatya! Fredrick is working in his native Uganda to promote awareness of autism spectrum disorder and to train teachers how to spot and manage it in their students. He will return there this summer as part of a Global Engagement Grant from UNT International. “In developing countries such as Uganda, there is limited service to individuals with ASD and there is a lack of ASD specific trained personnel as well. I am driven to do whatever is in my means to ensure the lives of individuals with ASD are impacted positively.”

Ryan Hooks is all about shattering expectations, whether for himself or others. At just 22 years old, the UNT Department of Communication Studies alumni was named head of sales at iFLY Indoor Skydiving in Frisco. He also pushed iFLY to expand its All Abilities Night, a special evening for members of the special needs community. A parent of one participant was so impressed, she recommended the Frisco City Council declare March 6 “iFLY Day” – which it did. Ryan, you make us #UNTproud!
