Future Graduate Students

Research is very important for graduate students in the Electrical Engineering department. You'll have research opportunities that you won't be able to find at many other schools.

Obtaining your Master of Science or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at UNT can be your doorway to more success, both now and in the future, as an academic researcher and professional engineer.

Program Objectives

Graduates will achieve master's or doctoral level proficiency in Electrical Engineering subjects that include digital and analog circuit design, adaptive and statistical signal processing, coding theory and communications, control system design, computer vision and image analysis, RF and Electromagnetics, and VLSI and embedded systems.

  • Graduates will attain a broad background in Electrical Engineering that provides them with a number of choices for future specialization.
  • Graduates will attain proficiency in both oral and written communication that is needed for achieving success in their future careers.
  • Graduates will learn how to learn and thereby attain the ability to pursue life-long learning and continued professional development.
  • Graduates will have experience in project-based learning and hence will be ready to engage in high-tech careers upon their graduation.

Graduate Admissions

  • Admission Requirements
    The student must satisfy all general admission requirements of the Electrical Engineering Department as follows:
    • Competitive score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); or graduation from the UNT undergraduate Electrical Engineering Program or a related program at UNT with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better within three years of earning the Bachelor's degree.
    • Acceptable scores on the TOEFL for applicants whose native language is not English.
    • A GPA of at least 3.0 on undergraduate Electrical Engineering course work.
    • Course work in mathematics
    Leveling courses will be required for applicants with degrees other than Electrical Engineering. The leveling courses include:
    • Mathematics through multivariable calculus
    • Physics including mechanics, electricity and magnetism
    • EENG 2620, Signals and Systems
    • EENG 2710, Digital Logic Design
    • EENG 3520, Electronics II
    • EENG 3710, Computer Organization
    • EENG 3810, Communication Systems

    An overall evaluation of credentials is used as a basis for admission to the program.

  • How to Apply
    1. Submit an online application at Apply Texas by the deadline.
    2. Submit standardized test scores (GRE, TOEFL, etc.) to UNT. The UNT school code for the GRE and TOEFL is 6481.
    3. Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended, three recommendation letters, and other relevant information to:

  • Application Deadline
    • The application deadlines for Domestic students are July 15th for Fall semester and November 15th for Spring semester.
    • The application deadlines for International students are March 15th for Fall semester and September 15th for Spring semester.
  • Application Deadline for TA Applications
    • The application deadlines for full consideration for all departmental fellowships and assistantships are March 1st for Fall semester and October 1st for Spring semester.

    Teaching Assistantship

    The responsibilities of a Teaching Assistant (TA) include but not limited to class preparation, office hours for students, grading, and other duties assigned by the instructor or the department. The typical work load for a TA is 20 hours per week.

    The TA must choose thesis option and are normally supported for a fourth semester if they have made sufficient progress on thesis and recommended by the student's major professor.

    To apply for the TA positions, please submit the TA application form to Jason Mieritz (Jason.Mieritz@unt.edu) by the deadlines of March 1st for Fall semester and October 1st for Spring Semester.
