DENTON, Texas - Shanice Stephens added more firepower to her backcourt today with the signing of guard Trai-ce McCoy to a National Letter of Intent. McCoy, a 5-9 guard from Fort Worth Dunbar High School, averaged a double-double last season and was the MVP of her district.
"Trai-ce is an incredibly gifted athlete whom we were fortunate to cross paths at exactly the right time," said coach Stephens. "I got to see her play in the April evaluation period and I instantly loved her tenacious defense and ability to score from beyond the arc. She was very strong attacking the basket and I thought she would fit our style immediately. We were very fortunate that she was still available."
McCoy is coming off a big senior season as she averaged a double-double, scoring 14.7 points and pulling down 10.1 rebounds. She led Dunbar to an undefeated season in district play this past season and was a member of the 2007 state championship team.
"She is very athletic guard and is going to be a great asset to their program," said Dunbar head coach Ebony Shaw. "North Texas is a good choice for her and she fits in very well to their program and what the coaches are doing."
This season was named the District 7-4A MVP and was a Class 4A All-Region selection. As a junior McCoy averaged 11 points and seven rebounds as she was named second-team all-district.
