North Texas Women Lose In Overtime To Middle Tennessee

DENTON (3/6/05) - The North Texas women's basketball team lost a heartbreaking 59-58 overtime game  to third-seeded Middle Tennessee in the second round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Super   Pit.   The Mean Green finished its season with a 14-14 overall record after clinching second in the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference during the regular   season.

Junior Erika Bobo, who scored 18 points in the game, gave North Texas its largest lead, 40-32, with 11:57 left in the second half. Middle Tennessee scored 10 of the next 11 points to take its first lead of the second half, 42-41, with 7:03 left in the game.

Bobo tied the game for the third time in the second period, 51-51, with a layup with two minutes on the clock. The NT point guard forced overtime with another layup after Chrissy Givens hit two free throws for MT.

North Texas gained a five-point lead in the first minute overtime, 58-53, after a three-pointer by Natalie Mireles and two free throws by Talicia Sanders. The Lady Raiders scored the final six points, including four by Patrice Holmes to steal the win.

Holmes scored a game-high 24 points in the game. She completed a double-double with 11 rebounds. Givens added 11 points for MT.

North Texas entered half ahead, 27-22, after battling back from a 12-point deficit. Holmes gave MT a 20-8 advantage midway through the first half. The Mean Green then roared back with a 19-2 run to put them ahead at the break. Bobo tied the game at 22-22 with two free throws and then Kelsie Edwards hit a three to give North Texas its first lead of the game.
