DENTON (1/24/04) - Arkansas State (12-5, 4-1) broke open a tight game early in the second half and held off the North Texas (7-10, 3-2) women’s basketball team to end their three-game winning streak 60-47 at the Super Pit. The Mean Green could not overcome three Indian players scoring in double-figures despite a team-leading 10 points from sophomore forward Jamie Armstrong. 

“When we were up 32-28 we had a chance to go up by six and did not do that. When they ( Arkansas State ) had a chance to build on their lead, they did it. We had the shots and did not hit them. If we are not getting good shots, the coaches and change the offense to open up some shots, but we had the shots and did not make them,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker.

“When we have the momentum, we do not take advantage of it like good teams do. If we take advantage and get a six or eight point lead, it can be a different game. We have to take advantage of those things" Slinker said. 

A tight first saw that saw nine-lead changes ended with the scored tied at 26-26. North Texas grabbed the early momentum in the second half to take their largest lead of the game at 32-28 with 14:13 remaining.

The Lady Indians responded with a 17-6 run over the next 7:44 to lead 45-38. The Mean Green got as close as 49-44 with 4:00 left, but Arkansas State ended the game on an 11-3 run. 

North Texas had three players add eight points and Kim Blanton collect a career-high five steals on the night. The Mean Green end their brief two-game home-stand and will now embark on a three-game road trip starting on January 29 at New Orleans.
