Mean Green To Play Rio Grande Valley In WNIT Consolation

DENTON -- North Texas will play the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in the first round of the Preseason WNIT consolation bracket Friday at 8 p.m. CT at Abilene Christian University's Moody Coliseum.

The consolation bracket is an eight-team bracket that is split into two pods of four with two host universities. Depending on the outcome of their game, the Mean Green will either play the winner or the loser between Omaha and ACU Saturday in Abilene.

In a close WNIT first round matchup, North Texas lost to Little Rock on Friday 55-44. Senior guard Candice Adams led the Mean Green in scoring with nine points off three 3-pointers. Fellow senior Terra Ellison led the team with nine rebounds.

Rio Grande Valley lost their first round game 71-53 to Nebraska on Saturday.

The Vaqueros' Shawnte Goff was the leading scorer in the first round game against the Cornhuskers. The senior guard scored 19 points on 7-of-23 shooting. This will be the seventh all-time meeting between the two schools. They last played in 2010. The Mean Green have beaten UTRGV five of the six previous times.
