DENTON - Mean Green student-athletes, coaches and staff gathered on the green carpet at the Gateway Center on the UNT campus Monday night for the inaugural The Scrappys, an awards ceremony celebrating North Texas athletic and academic achievement and community service.

The event, which the athletic department plans to be an annual affair, was highlighted by a banquet and the recognition of 2016-17's best performances as voted by coaches, administrators and Mean Green fans.

The evening's biggest winner was the tennis team's Maria Kononova, a sophomore from Ufa, Russia, who won Individual Performance of the Year and Female Student-Athlete of the Year, and was also named the team's Most Valuable Player.

The Male Student-Athlete of the Year award went to golf's Cory Churchman, a senior from Abilene. Churchman was also the men's golf team's MVP.
