SAN ANTONIO - The Mean Green swimming and diving team fell short of taking gold at day one of the Incarnate Word Christmas Invitational, but four podium finishes propelled the team to a second-place standing going into Saturday's events. North Texas trails only Rice in the four-team invite.

As they have continued to do all season, seniors Krista Rossum and Mona Groteguth claimed impressive finishes on Friday. Groteguth set the team's best time of the season in the 500 freestyle with her second-place finish (4:52.26). Meanwhile, Rossum took third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.72.

Relay finishes played a huge role for North Texas on day one of the holiday meet. Rossum and Groteguth joined junior Bianca Bocsa and freshman Isabelle Morris on a squad that added two times to the team's all-time performances list. Their third-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay in the day's opening event was good for eighth-best in the team's history (1:35.11). In the 400 medley relay, the four swimmers combined to finish second with a 3:46.62 time, good for seventh all-time.

Day two of the University of Incarnate Word Christmas Invitational will begin tomorrow from Palo Alto College with a preliminary round start time of 10 a.m. Finals are set to begin at 6 p.m.
