Freshmen Power North Texas In 6-1 Win Over Sam Houston St

DENTON, Texas (9/11/05) Four North Texas freshmen combined for six goals to lead the Mean Green soccer team past Sam Houston State 6-1 at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

 

Freshmen Brittany Cleveland, Gennifer Hurst, Kelli Lunsford and Jessie Wolfe combined for six goals, one assist, and 13 points on the afternoon as the Mean Green (4-2-1) extended its unbeaten streak to five games.

 

Cleveland had a hat trick on the afternoon becoming the first freshman to record a hat trick since 2003.

 

Lunsford started the scoring in the seventh minute of play on a penalty kick after junior Jamie Yates was tackled in the box. Cleveland followed up with two goals in a span of 71 seconds to give North Texas a 3-0 lead.

 

Cleveland’s first goal came in the 12th minute of play off a centering pass from Yates. Her second goal came from 15 yards at the top of the box.

 

Wolfe made it 4-0 North Texas in the 35th minute off a loose ball from five yards out.

 

Cleveland topped the day off with her third goal in the 54th minute of play on the right side eight yards out to give North Texas a 5-0 lead.

 

Hurst scored her first goal of the season in the 75th minute of play from the left side after getting a pass from Angela Hawkins.

 

Senior goalkeeper Briana Buchanan made two saves on the day to pick up the win. Buchanan now has 200 saves for her career and needs only three more to become the Mean Green’s all-time saves leader.

 

North Texas closes out its four-game homestand on Friday, Sept. 16 with a match against the regionally ranked Rice Owls at 7 p.m.
