Mean Green Tee Off From Maryb S. Kauth Invite Sunday In San Antonio

Oct. 21, 2017

SAN ANTONIO - The North Texas women's golf team is set to compete in its fourth tournament of the fall season Sunday at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational, hosted by UT San Antonio at Briggs Ranch, a par-72, 6,450 yard course. The Mean Green will take on a field that includes seven top-50 teams, according to Golfstat.

"I am excited for us to play in San Antonio,” head coach Michael Akers said. “This is an event that my former team played every year. The golf course is outstanding. It does have Bent grass greens and Zoysia grass fairways which we saw at Kansas State and Mizzou. The field is stacked, which puts in a great spot to improve our national ranking."

North Texas' lineup comprised of junior Sol Lee, sophomore Lauren Cox, junior Sabina Pena, sophomore Elena Kim and senior Nyca Khaw will open the three-day event on Sunday, Oct. 22, carrying through Tuesday, Oct. 24. The five Mean Green golfers are slated to tee off in round one on Sunday morning and fans can follow all of the action with live results here, courtesy of Birdiefire.

"Sol should feel great confidence as she had her most consistent tournament of her career at Mizzou [earlier this month], Akers continued. “She is swinging great. The entire team is really showing great improvement with their short games. We do drills every practice and we can see them getting up and down more often. We also have worked on birdie conversion."

Through the first three tournaments of the season, North Texas is 12th in the nation in greens in regulation (.665), 16th in the country in fairways hit (.729), tie for 17th in the nation in eagles, with three (two of which belong to Lee) and are 22nd nationally in birdie conversion (.196).

The 54-hole event will open with the first round on Sunday, round two on Monday, and the third and final round on Tuesday.

The Mean Green will compete against host UT San Antonio, No. 3 Arkansas, No. 31 Auburn, No. 24 Denver, No. 28 Houston, Kansas State, Maryland, Middle Tennessee, No. 34 Oklahoma, TCU, No. 38 Texas A&M, Texas State and No. 30 Texas Tech. All rankings are from Golfstat’s most recent relative rankings poll.
