Classes for Children (beginners start in fall only) 

Beginning classes for children 2nd through 12th grade take place twice a week (Beginning in the fall and continuing into the spring). The 11-week semesters follows the university’s academic calendar. Students must provide their own instruments or rent them from a local music store. Our staff will measure each student and recommend the appropriate instrument size.

 

Level 1

The Level 1 (1st year) students in the String Project meet twice a week, once in a large group class and once in a small pod of 3-4 students or a private lesson. During their first year, students develop a foundation in string playing technique in a class taught by an experienced lead teacher and two assistants (small pod and private lessons will be taught by the assistants). The instruction is Suzuki based and will emphasize ear training using familiar songs. Beginning class students do not need to be able to read music or have had previous musical experience. 

 

  • Tuition: $400 per year ($210 per semester) for group plus pod lessons or $500 per year ($260 per semester) for group plus private lessons​
  • Group Classes (choose one): Monday 4pm-5pm  or Tuesday: 5pm-6pm
  • Pod lesson option (choose one OR private lesson option): Wednesday 4pm-4:45pm or Thursday 5pm-5:45pm or Friday 4pm-4:45pm
  • Private lesson option: (Schedule with individual teacher)
  • Please note that harp students must choose the Tuesday 5-6PM slot and private lessons (no pods available)

 

Level 2

The Level 2 (2nd year) students in the String Project meet twice a week, once in a large group class and once in a small pod of 3-4 students or a private lesson. During their second year, students continue to develop their foundation of good string playing technique in a class taught by an experienced lead teacher and at least two assistants. Level 2 students will build on their repertoire and skills learned in Level 1 and begin to learn how to read notes. Prerequisite skills for Level 2 are the ability to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (theme and variations) and Are You Sleeping? with correct instrument/bow position, intonation, and clear tone.

 

  • Tuition: $400 per year ($210 per semester) for group plus pod lessons or $500 per year ($260 per semester) for group plus private lessons

Pre-Orchestra Level

Students continue to work on technique and begin to develop skills needed to play in an ensemble.Students practice reading and playing harmony, melody, and bass lines using the book Learning Together: Sequential Repertoire for Solo Strings or String Ensemble Books 1 and 2.

  • Group classes: Monday 5pm-6pm OR Tuesday 4pm-5pm

UNT Youth Orchestra

Youth orchestra members are expected to have solid music reading skills, ability to play in an ensemble with at least three parts, experience following a conductor, and a strong foundation in instrumental technique. 

 

  • Tuition: $200 per year for group OPTIONAL private lesson $500 per year ($260 per semester) for group plus private lessons
  • Group Class: 5:30pm-6:30pm
  • Private lesson option: (Schedule with individual teacher)

 

UNT Eclectic Styles Orchestra

Eclectic styles orchestra is for students with orchestral experience and advanced instrumental technique. Group is by audition only. Ensemble will play fiddle, jazz, pop, rock, and world music selections. Students will learn techniques specific to eclectic styles as well as gain more advanced orchestral experience.

 

  • Tuition: $200 per year for group OPTIONAL private lesson $500 per year ($260 per semester) for group plus private lessons
  • Group Class: 5:30pm-6:30pm
  • Private lesson option: (Schedule with individual teacher)

 

For Instrument Rentals, there will be a few instruments at UNT for rent $75 per year. Otherwise we will always partner with Crossroads-based The Luthier Shop.
