Elaine Pawlowicz received her BFA from Southern Methodist University in 1990 and her MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1993. She continued to live and work as an artist in Chicago for the following 15 years before teaching at the University of North Texas in 2006.
Her paintings are inspired by the Chicago Imagist Tradition. The style is a type of magical realism where the space is flat with an idiosyncratic perspective. The paintings are speckled with tiny characters swallowed up by neon color fields. These highly personalized narratives are slightly ambiguous and peculiarly lighthearted.
Her work has been exhibited in numerous national solo and group shows. She was commissioned in a highly competitive process by the City of Chicago to paint 12 large scale paintings for permanent installation at Oriole Park Library.
She was formerly the Midwest Regional Representative in Admissions for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago1996-2001 and also worked as an artist consultant for two fine art paint companies specializing in teaching materials and techniques in painting. She has been awarded many professional artist residences including Ucross Foundation (Wyoming) Montana Artist’s Refuge, Pouch Cove Foundation (Newfoundland), Gullkistan (Iceland), New Pacific Studio (New Zealand), Obras Foundation (Portugal) and AIR Paducah, Kentucky. Elaine has taught college level art in painting, drawing and design for over 15 years at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Dayton and currently at the University of North Texas.
