Needs Statement

The birth of a child with ambiguous genitalia poses multiple dilemma for healthcare providers and parents. This presentation will describe the difference among differences of sexual differentiation (DSD) and explore some of the ethical issues encountered. An example of a multidisciplinary approach to families and communication guidelines will be presented.

Target Audience

This activity was planned to address the educational needs of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers and licensed professional counselors.

Objectives

• Discuss the ethics of fertility preservation in children with DSD
• Analyze the difference among differences of sexual differentiation, sexual orientation and gender identity
• Describe the pathophysiology of sexual differentiation
• Examine a newborn baby with DSD and provide initial guidance to the family
• Discuss multidisciplinary team approach to families
