- Apply early for your passport and any visas if required.

- You are subject to the laws and customs of your host country. Know these laws and customs before you travel.
- Avoid risky and illegal behavior.
Attend Pre-Departure Orientation
These sessions are required. Failure to attend a pre-departure orientation session could result in a student offer of admission being rescinded.

Prepare for Travel
- Ensure credit and debit cards are available for international use.
- Enable your phone for service abroad or purchase a calling card for emergencies.
- Make a list of phone numbers to call in the event that any of your documents are stolen.
- Make a separate list of the contact numbers in your personal cell phone.
- Research information ahead of time on local medical services.
- Leave copies of important documents with your emergency contact. Pack a second copy.
- Research destination ground transportation prior to departure.
Pack Wisely
- Check with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for baggage restrictions.
- Check voltage and outlet style of your destination for adapters and transformers.
- Check internet/Wi-Fi availability in your destination.
- Research the weather in your destination.
- Leave valuables at home.
- Bring all prescription medications in your carry-on, in ORIGINAL packaging. Bring enough medication for the duration of your stay.
- Travel only with major credit/debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express).
- Keep luggage with you at all times and pack lightly.
Remain Alert and Aware
- Do not share personal and identifying information with strangers.
- Do not display large amounts of cash/travelers checks etc.
- Avoid walking alone at night. Avoid deserted areas at all times.
- Use ATMs that are inside banks and need a card to be accessed. Avoid ATMs at night.
- Research public transportation in your destination to find out best practices.
- Keep a copy of any reclamation forms or reports filed if your items are lost or stolen.
- Never consume illegal drugs or hold illegal drugs in your possession.
- Know the location of the nearest U.S. Embassy and register prior to departure.
