Needs Statement

Healthcare represents almost 1/5 of the US economy. Surprisingly it is not the clinician or the patient who is in the driver's seat of this massive enterprise--nothing happens in the US healthcare system without a commercial or public 3rd party payer. Still, many or even most of the clinical professionals providing care have only a superficial understanding of the system, regulators, and policies that govern their work. At the same time our clinicians are looked to by their patients and larger society for moral, political, and other leadership as we navigate healthcare reform. This event would open conversations from a largely unfamiliar perspective for many clinicians, and may allow them a more meaningful and effective voice as patient advocates. This presentation will bring together an expert panel of diverse viewpoints to discuss potential directions in US health insurance and how changes in health insurance will impact delivery of care.

Target Audience

This activity was planned to address the educational needs of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, public health professionals, physical therapists, social workers, nurses and licensed professional counselors.

Objectives

• Demonstrate familiarity with health insurance models and the corresponding features of each model.
• Differentiate the current financial and operational challenges to healthcare organizations and how those challenges may evolve in the near future.
• Operationalize how providers can predict changes in health insurance and coordinate with delivery of care.
