Needs Statement

20% of all falls cause broken bones, head injuries or other serious injuries and over 700,000 people a year are hospitalized for fall related injuries. (1) This activity will discuss how to identify those at risk for falling and how to implement evidence-based fall risk reduction interventions.

Target Audience

This activity was planned to address the educational needs of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and social workers.

Objectives

  • Discuss the importance of falls and fall prevention;
  • List modifiable risk factors for falls;
  • Name 3 assessments for gait and balance and how they are performed;
  • Identify appropriate and evidenced based interventions to decrease fall risk.
