“Sustainable Entrepreneurship” A Panel Discussion

The University of North Texas Fibers’ Department collaborating with the Office of Sustainability presents: “Sustainable Entrepreneurship” panel discussion.

Date: Apr 24 2013 - 1:30pm - 3:30pm

Artist/Speakers
Lesli Robertson, Moderator, Senior Lecture Fiber Arts Department, University of North Texas
Dr. Tony Mendes, Director of the Murphy Center of Entrepreneurship, University of North Texas
Heather Gregory, Community Engagement Coordinator of SCRAP Denton
Arthur Porter, Co-founder of Dallas Designing Dreams

The University of North Texas Fibers Department is collaborating with the Office of Sustainability to present the “Sustainable Entrepreneurship” panel discussion. This panel brings together three organizations who share a common goal in providing communities an environmental, social, and economically sustainable pathway to discuss their experiences and ideas surrounding productivity over time. Sustainability continues to grow as many projects and businesses across the nation challenge individuals to rethink how we consume and interact with our environment. For anyone interested in entrepreneurship through sustainable methods, this panel discussion will offer insights in how local organizations provide an avenue for creative growth.

This panel discussion is a part of a collaborative project called Shred to Sell with the UNT Department of Sustainability. Students from the CVAD Fibers Department worked with discarded UNT tee-shirts and transformed them into innovative products which will be sold through various venues including SCRAP Denton. More information can be found at www.fibersnorthtexas.tumblr.com.

Event is free and open to the public.

Yuma Symposium 2013

Yuma Art Symposium is referred to as “comfort food for hungry artist,” a back yard BBQ that got out of hand.

Taken from the web site:
The Yuma Symposium is a series of demonstrations, lectures and slide presentations given by both internationally recognized and emerging artists who have demonstrated unusual talent.

Activities include an exhibit of work by presenters and a student show, the National Saw, File, & Solder Sprints, Show Your Stuff night, the annual pin auction, shopping and eating in Algodones, Mexico, and a fiesta and dance on Saturday night.

This year was the 34th Yuma Symposium. In attendance representing UNT CVAD:

CVAD Faculty: James Thurman and Harlan Butt

Graduate Students in Studio Art: Hetty Estes, Tamar Navama, Joy Ude, Chesley Williams, William Bridges, Fari Rahimi, and Liana Tomchesson

Undergraduate in Studio Art: Dani Manning

In this year’s National Saw, File and Solder Sprints the UNT team (Hetty Estes, Tamar Navama, and Liana Tomchesson) won the “Style Award” trophies.

Extending an invitation to all of CVAD, we will be hosting “Spirit of Yuma,” an event on April 25 to promote next year’s symposium.

Engelstad’s work has been exhibited internationally and featured in media outlets, such as Art News, Metropolis, Flash Art, Time Out, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and NBC Nightly News. Through Voices From the Center, Engelstad’s interviews with Central Europeans about life during and after communism were documented in an award winning web-based project that also included exhibitions, panel discussions and lectures throughout Central Europe and the United States.

In 2010 she founded Make Art with Purpose (MAP), an organization and virtual resource center for creative projects that shape and transform the world in positive ways. MAP initiatives include an interactive, open source website, projects and exhibitions, and public programs that engage communities and promote social practice throughout the world. Fibers students exchange ideas and equipment with Material Sciences

Lesli Robertson's Advanced Weaving course took a trip to the Material Sciences Department at Discovery Park as a result of the research cluster involving both departments (http://renewablebioproducts.unt.edu/). During this semester, Material Science intern, Gerrit Staufenberg, has been working on the computerized knitting machines at the Fibers Department, knitting a biodegradable fiber for testing at the lab. Our students finally had a chance to see what machine made this - called the extruder. This fiber-making machine has the potential to take recyclable plastic and turn it back into usable fiber - endless possibilities for our weaving students!

Weaving Faculty contributes to "Start"

The Start Journal of Arts and Culture has launched a new online publication that highlights the art and design of Uganda and UNT Lecturer Lesli Robertson is a contributor. This is a wonderful window into a culture's art practices.

The most recent issue contains former CVAD visiting artist Fred Mutebi as the featured artist. Lesli has also written a review of his recent exhibition in Kampala.

For more information on Lesli's Ugandan Bark Cloth Project, check out her blog.
