Needs Statement

According to recent reports, medication nonadherence - also referred to as MNA – impacts approximately 187 million patients in the United States, or 25% of the entire U.S. population. Medication nonadherence is a growing problem that is poised to have an increasingly more profound impact on healthcare in the coming decades due to demographic trends.  The SIMPLE STEP rubric provides an easy solution to assist with provider communication for medication nonadherence.

 

 

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners. nurses, and other health care professionals working with patients to improve nonadherence rates.

Objectives

Define medication adherence and the health economic impact of nonadherence;

List factors that drive medication nonadherence;

Identify barriers to medication adherence faced by patients with chronic diseases;

Describe the impact of low health literacy on clinical outcomes and its potential link to medication adherence, and

Discuss the pharmacy-driven SIMPLE STEP approach to mediation adherence.
