Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Department of Linguistics at the University of North Texas invites applications at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with a primary specialization in Computational Linguistics with the additional responsibility of Chair of Department of Linguistics. The department chair holds a 12-month appointment. While the area of specialization in computational linguistics is open, we seek candidates who are active researchers in topics that complement existing departmental strengths (such as corpus-based research, low-resource language documentation and resource creation). Evidence of an active research agenda, a track record in grant acquisition, and a strong commitment to innovative teaching is required for consideration.
Linguistics moved from the College of Arts and Sciences to the College of Information (COI) in fall 2014. The move to COI has positioned Linguistics in a collaborative environment for developing cutting-edge curricula that incorporate research on language structure and use with database design and management, text mining, computational and quantitative methods in linguistics, natural language processing, and teaching and analyzing language with technology. We seek candidates who will foster the existing creative and collaborative environment in the department, and who will build on the existing strengths of the faculty to lead the department in promising new directions in linguistic research.
In addition to the administrative responsibilities as Chair of the Linguistics Department, the successful candidate will be expected to:
Contribute to the ongoing development of the Department's degree programs in linguistics and computational linguistics;
--Initiate new interdisciplinary collaborations and expand existing ones with other computational research groups on campus, in particular in Computer Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Information Science;
--Spearhead efforts to recruit new students at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
--Work to build partnerships and internship opportunities with local industry;
--Develop new relationships and strengthen existing ones with international partners;
--Build and cultivate alumni relations;
--Provide leadership in growing research efforts of the department, including grants and publications;
--Seek innovative funding opportunities for the department.
Degree programs in the Department of Linguistics include a BA in Linguistics, an MA in Linguistics, an MA in ESL, an Interdisciplinary MS in Computational Linguistics, and a Graduate Academic Certificate in TESOL. Jointly with the Information Science (IS) Department, Linguistics Department also offers the Information Science (IS) Ph.D. program with a concentration in linguistics. Minimum Qualifications:
A PhD in Linguistics, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Information Science or other related field with a strong background in computational linguistics / natural language processing is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Desirable qualifications include previous supervisory experience in an administrative position with budgeting authority and a demonstrated record of or potential for high-quality educational leadership, especially in the areas of curriculum and program development.
