MFA Alumnus Irby Pace: Explosions in the Sky
Galleri Urbane is pleased to announce the second solo exhibition by Galleri artist Irby Pace, Explosions in the Sky. Represented by Galleri Urbane since 2013, Pace’s “Idle Voids” series experienced widespread exposure, from the cover story of the Dallas Observer to coverage in the Huffington Post. What began as a simple idea while completing his MFA in photography at the University of North Texas has successfully come to fruition over the past two years, with works placed in numerous national and international collections.
Explosions in the Sky finds Irby Pace after a residency at the Dallas Arboretum and a trip to the vast landscape of Marfa, Texas. By using crude and readily available sources, Pace experiments with the tension of upwards or outwards movement against the downward force of gravity, creating the illusion of gravity defiance. In a tricky collaboration with nature and the urban environment, he alters the physical space with real floating colorful clouds of smoke, capturing a momentary glimpse of the vacant space. Through his latest photographs, Irby Pace will be sure to offer a view of these environments like never seen before.
Irby Pace received his BFA in Photography from Texas Tech University and an MFA in Photography from the University of North Texas in 2012. He currently is an Assistant Professor in Photography/Video at Troy University in Troy, Alabama. His photography has been featured in Wired Magazine, Ripleys Believe it Or Not, and many other websites, blogs and online magazines. Explosions in the Sky is traveling from the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts in Lubbock, Texas.
There is a reception and preview on March 28, 6-8pm.

Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas celebrate creativity and community with a Sunday Soup Supper on November 16th at 3015 at Trinity Groves. "CADD FUNd: Winner Takes All", will be a fun, fast-paced evening of sharing innovative ideas about potential artistic projects. The CADD FUNd will make possible a high-impact idea that needs the support of the Dallas-Fort Worth arts community.
The idea for "CADD FUNd: Winner Takes All" was inspired by similar events throughout the United States such as Feast in Brooklyn, Incubate in Chicago and Spread in Santa Fe. Over the past several years, numerous organizations have taken the basic premise of a Sunday soup dinner - collect creative proposals, invite the public to pay, eat, and listen, and then democratically vote for a winner - and adapted it to their own local purposes.
Our six finalists are from a pool of current or previous M.A. or M.F.A. candidate from an institution within 100 miles of Dallas. They were selected by three jurors including: Gabriel Ritter, the Nancy & Tim Hanley Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at Dallas Museum of Art; Judy Deaton, Chief Curator at The Grace Museum; and William Rudolph, Ph.D., The Marie and Hugh Halff Curator of American Art and Mellon Chief Curator at the San Antonio Museum of Art.
During the event the finalists will each present short proposals for original and yet-to-be-realized new projects, audience members will ask questions and then vote for their favorite project. After a short recess to tally the votes, the Winner Takes All!
ALL funds raised by ticket sales will go to the winner!
Tickets are $40.00 per person

Professor Robert Jessup featured at The MAC
5/10/14 – 6/28/14
Robert JessupSelections – New Work: 2013-2014
An opening reception will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at The McKinney Avenue Contemporary, located at 3120 McKinney Avenue, in the Uptown District of Dallas.
Exhibitions will be on view through June 28, 2014.
The MAC welcomes Robert Jessup for a solo exhibition in the New Works Space this summer. Selections – New Work: 2013-2014 includes selected paintings from the past year, which explore his journey into a “free play of form”. The intuitive, non-representational form making gives his paintings an open ended resolution, keeping singularity in meaning out of his works. Having identity without being identifiable, the paintings are free to speak for themselves through an abstract visual narrative.
For more information, please go to the MAC website.

ROBERT JESSUP: NEW PAINTINGS
February 22 - March 22, 2014
These pictures are the result of intuitive, non-representational form-making interacting with the mental forces that want to imagistically bind visual elements together. I have been trying to invent configurations that stop just short of representation, configurations that have identity without being identifiable. I have wanted there to be the feel of drama and the sense of narrative without the presence of recognizable images or symbols. Neither abstract nor figurative but still imbued with the current of a story. -Robert Jessup

OCULAR: An exhibition featuring Rachel Black
Installation will be available through January 31, 2014. |
OCULAR
Eagle Exhibit Hall, EESAT Bldg, through January 31
"The works presented in Ocular began with a shoebox. The contents were a career’s worth of accumulated slides which once belonged to an ophthalmologist. I continue to be inspired and drawn to this collection of imagery as a starting point for my artwork. The originals are intriguing as artifacts themselves but translating the microscopic images onto canvas and paper is a process which brings to light new ways of seeing them."

New Media Senior Show
Just sending a quick note to advise that the New Media Seniors are having their exhibition reception in the Lightwell Gallery today between 5pm – 7:30 pm.
This means that there may be some sound associated with the artworks and traveling through the Lightwell.
Also, I would like to advise that we will have two performances, one is a durational piece that would last the entire reception, and the other will go sometime between 6:30 to 7:15pm. This second performance contains bad language, and it can be hard to see for some people, there is no nudity, but it is a strong public disclosure/speech about LGBT and race issues.
You are very welcome to join us, and thank you for your patience this week about the sound. I appreciate your collaboration.
I will make sure after the reception tonight everything get back to normal.
Thank you,
Paula Gaetano-Adi

"TOPO-TARANTULAS" at WARE:WOLF:HAUS
CLOSING RECEPTION
SATURDAY OCTOBER 5, 6-10.
EARLIER VIEWINGS ARE AVAILABLE BY APPOINTMENT.
Tim DeVoe and Miriam Ellen Ewers collaborate on a new site specific installation that occupies the intersection between sculpture and architecture. This large scale work demonstrates the artists shared preoccupations with the interconnections between human kinesis and topological landscapes. The work requires the audience to suspend their sense of environment and enter a physically challenging setting through a portal that takes the shape of a van. TOPO-TARANTULAS force the audience to traverse a fabricated landscape and engage in the space of WARE:WOLF:HAUS. This is the first collaborative show and first exhibition in the Dallas area for DeVoe and Ewers.
Tim DeVoe, new Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas, holds degrees from the Maryland Institute College of Art (BFA) and Virginia Commonwealth University (MFA). His works have been shown at Keith Talent, London, England; Kim Foster, NYC; The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, Virginia Beach, VA; and K Space Contemporary, Corpus Christi, TX. His new studio is in Denton, Texas. http://timothydexterdevoe.com
Miriam Ellen Ewers, received her MFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2006 and Bachelors of Fine Art in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2000. Her works have been shown at ADA Gallery, Richmond, VA; Kim Foster Galley, NYC; Monte Vista Gallery, Los Angles, CA; The Washington Project for the Arts Corcoran Flashpoint Gallery, Washington, DC; The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, Virginia Beach, VA; and is currently featured in the 2013 Texas Biennial at the Blue Star Contemporary Arts Museum. http://miriamellenewers.com
