UNT GIVING WEEK 2015, Sept 14-19

Today, we’re kicking off a celebration of UNT Giving Week – 125 hours of giving, designed to help kick off the 125th anniversary celebration. The campaign is running from September 14 through September 19 and will give you a chance to reconnect to your UNT roots and celebrate your alma mater.

The College of Visual Arts and Design (CVAD) assumes a critical role in building our region into a world-renowned center for culture and education. CVAD fosters creative futures for its diverse student population and the area through rigorous arts-based education, arts- and client-based studio practice, scholarship and research. Your generous support helps us to achieve this mission.

No matter where you are, I hope you’ll join me in raising the bar for UNT by visiting One.UNT.edu/Inspire125 and giving back to CVAD. On the donation form, check “other” and write in College of Visual Art and Design.

Let’s kick off the next 125 years the right way!

Thank you for your support!

Meaningful Gamification, Nov 21 @ 5:30p

November 21, 2013 | Discovery Park B155 | Reception 5:30 | Lecture 6:00

Dr. Scott Nicholson

Meaningful Gamification:
Motivating Through Play
Instead of Manipulating Through Rewards

Please join Dr. Scott Nicholson as he explains the use of game design concepts to create a layer on a real world setting. Typically, gamification focuses on the use of rewards like points and badges to change the behavior of users. Rewards can cause long-term damage to intrinsic motivation, however, so Dr. Nicholson has focused on developing the concept of meaningful gamification as a way to build intrinsic motivation.

Dr. Nicholson is an Associate Professor at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies and Director of the Because Play Matters game lab and the Game Designers' Guild of Syracuse. He is an alumnus of the Interdisciplinary PhD program in Information Science at UNT. During 2011-2012, he was a visiting professor at MIT in Comparative Media Studies and the GAMBIT game lab. Dr. Nicholson is a published board game designer, wrote the book Everyone Plays at the Library, and was an academic reference librarian at Texas Christian University. He hosts a research blog at http://becauseplaymatters.com.

The College of Information sponsors a Colloquium Series at which renowned researchers and professionals address topics of interest to students and faculty. The goal of the series is to nurture the community of scholars and provide opportunities for faculty and students to engage in the scholarly and research life of the College and the University.

Friday, March 29th, Figure Studio

Post on behalf of community member seeking to commission work

ATTENTION ALL ARTISTS!

OPPORTUNITY FOR EXTRA $$ !!!!

We are seeking someone to help us create a character based on our concept.

As you can see below on the preliminary logo, we used a malamute (snow dog). You can play off this or come up with a completely different dog that your imagination thinks fits our theme. ANY DOG!! Here are some thoughts (remember... Hawaiian Shaved Ice, Hot Dogs, the beach, tiki huts, sand, umbrellas, etc. )
  • dog on a beach chair eating a shaved ice.
  • dog hanging out eating a hot dog.
  • dog just chillin' by the pool or beach.
You get the idea ! HELP US CREATE A COOL MASCOT AND IMAGE!!!!

Also, we need our chalkboard menus lettered and decorated, so we will need you in the future to help keep us stay fresh and COOL!! These two tasks do not have to be done by the same artist.

NOTE!!!!!! Before you contact us please email to the address below a sample of your work. Maybe even a sketch of a cool dog at the beach!

Adjunct Professor Arthur Pena

Our adjunct faculty are just as involved in the art world as our full time faculty and out students. One of our new adjuncts, Arthur Pena, has been very busy this semester:. Here are few things past, present, and future that have happened.

In September 2012, Arthur interviewed Wendy White for curbsandstoops.com. This was the only interview the New York City-based artist gave for her solo show in Chelsea.

He has another interview upcoming for the site with Los Angeles-based artist Allison Schulnik. This will be published at the end of the month on curbsandstoops.com

Arthur was recently in a group show titled Stamina at WORK/DETROIT at the University of Michigan that just came down. You can read more about it on their website.

He will be in a show next month in Brooklyn, NY, at Projekt722 titled Temperature.

And finally, there is also a current feature in F'DLUXE about the gallery Arthur shows at written by the head of the Southern Methodist University Meadows School of the Arts Michael Corris with an image of Arthur's work.

Fibers students exchange ideas and equipment with Material Sciences

Lesli Robertson's Advanced Weaving course took a trip to the Material Sciences Department at Discovery Park as a result of the research cluster involving both departments (http://renewablebioproducts.unt.edu/). During this semester, Material Science intern, Gerrit Staufenberg, has been working on the computerized knitting machines at the Fibers Department, knitting a biodegradable fiber for testing at the lab. Our students finally had a chance to see what machine made this - called the extruder. This fiber-making machine has the potential to take recyclable plastic and turn it back into usable fiber - endless possibilities for our weaving students!

MFA Alumna Fundraising for Nepal

The following is a message from Gabriela Kolcavova (MFA - Photography)
Dear friends and friends of photography,

Many of you have followed my volunteering journey in Nepal this year. Some of you have supported me directly in many ways or supported students in Nepal through collecting books for them or contributing to the cause of building a proper library in their village named Bhiman which became my home for half a year. It is time to let you know where all these efforts have gone and how this story continues. To do so I wrote a summery of what has been done and where we stand now for those of you who might be interested.

You may also remember that I volunteered in Nepal as an English teacher with no support of any institution that would sponsor me. I was sponsored by myself with the help of some of you who joined me in during my fund-raising before I left for Nepal. That way I was able to cover my main expenses such as air-ticket and medical necessities. However, during my stay in Nepal there were so many opportunities to be truly helpful through buying clothes, shoes, headlights, food and much more to those who were in need. Several of you asked me to do my second fund-raising with my photography from Nepal.

I hope some of you will simply and merely enjoy the new images with absolutely no obligation expected. Some of you may just want to pass this on. To others I hope this is an opportunity to gain hand-printed silver gelatin and certified archival color photographs that might be of interest to you for a third of a standard gallery price and in small editions of a size never printed before. Despite of what has been said above, this fund-raising is mainly focused on raising money to support Pawan Poudel, the youngest son of the family, which took care of me the whole time for no acceptance of any finance. Pawan would like to get a chance in the Czech Republic now. He is in the process of applying for study and work visa in the Czech Republic.

I am offering a choice of fourteen selected (attached) photographs in the size of 10 x 12 inches (the actual image size is 8x10 inches, i.e. 20 x 26 cm), editions of 12 images of each print. Seven of them are silver gelatin prints hand-printed by myself all made from a large format negative. The other seven are color prints photographed on large format color transparencies, professionally printed on certified archival Hahnemühle fine art paper. All images were taken in Nepal in the last 12 months and portray my immediate surroundings and my closest friends there.

All photographers are offered for the price of $280 which does include the international shipping...

Thank you for your support. Warm greetings to all of you from the heart of Europe, Brno, Czech republic...

With appreciation,
Gabriela Kolcavova

Want to be a good Researcher?

Attention Graduate Students!

This article from the Chronicle of Higher Education highlights findings showing that those graduate students who teach do better in research than those who just work as research assistants. The lessons though would seem to be broadly applicable to us all and show that teaching reinforces research, which we know advances teaching.

Bee colony removal at RTVF effects ART

A professional bee removal company, Bee Safe, will safely remove the bee colonies from the walls of the Radio, Television, Film and Performing Arts Building on Saturday and Sunday. As a result, an area bordered by Mulberry Street, Welch Street and Union Circle will be cordoned off to protect individuals who may be on campus. Also, a parking lot and five buildings will be closed or have limited access including:
  • Art Building – closed
  • Business Administration Building – closed except for computer labs
  • Curry Hall – closed.
  • Physics Building – closed except for ongoing research in labs
  • Radio, Television, Film and Performing Arts Building – closed except for KNTU operations
  • Lot 50 – closed beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday. Any cars left in the lot after 6 a.m. Saturday may not be removed until work is completed Sunday.
The bees will be captured and given to area beekeepers to form new colonies.
Since the north wall of the RTVF building will be breached for the bee capture, work is expected to take Saturday and Sunday. Reconstruction of the wall will take approximately two weeks.

One of the bee colonies has been in existence for at least 18 years. The second, which is within 50 feet of the original colony, has been in existence for about two years. UNT has allowed the bees to live peacefully for many years because of their benefit to the environment. One of the colonies has recently shown signs of becoming aggressive, which led to the decision to remove the colonies.
