What is the difference between graduation and commencement?

Graduation refers to the process in which students apply for their degree to be awarded at the end of the semester. The advising and registrar’s offices will complete final audits of student degrees. If the final audit is approved then students will be awarded a degree and a diploma will be mailed.

Commencement refers to the event held by the institution to celebrate students’ graduation. Commencement includes the public conferring of degrees, walking across the stage, and receiving a UNT Dallas diploma cover. Walking in commencement does not guarantee that a student has graduated. Some students may walk across the stage and appear in the commencement program while not having graduated yet.

Where can I order my cap/gown/stole/class rings/announcements?

Visit the UNT Dallas Bookstore on campus or contact them at 972-780-3652 or at untdallas@bkstr.com. The commencement gowns for both graduates and undergraduates have changed. Due to the uniqueness of the new commencement gowns, students will not be able to reuse gowns from previous commencements or purchase their gowns from another source.

Students will report to the Chapel via the Cockrell Hill entrance already dressed out in their cap and gowns and be sure that their gowns are pressed and free of wrinkles. If cap and gown malfunctions occur, students are able to purchase replacement regalia items at the Chapel via our bookstore representatives.

What if I have earned honors?

An email will be sent out to all students who qualify for honors. This email will include information on how to order and wear honors regalia for commencement. The commencement program will include a notation on applicable honors based on the student’s current overall GPA prior to fall semester final grades. UNT Dallas recognizes the following Latin honors:

Cum Laude – 3.5-3.69 Overall GPA

Magna Cum Laude – 3.7-3.89 Overall GPA

Summa Cum Laude – 3.9-4.0 Overall GPA
