Training and Practice Centers

Center for Public Health Practice

The mission of the Center for Public Health Practice (CPHP) is to coordinate educational opportunities for students, faculty and public health professionals that will advance health knowledge and minimize health disparities among populations.

One component of the CPHP is to plan, supervise and evaluate the Public Health Practice Experience for students within the School of Public Health who are completing academic requirements that require applied public health experiences in practice settings. The primary goals of these diverse educational experiences are to enhance public health knowledge, create an awareness of challenges and opportunities in public health, and provide a comprehensive experience that is mutually beneficial to the student and the supervising organization. A student must have a 3.0 to register and complete the practice experience.

Texas Public Health Training Center

The Texas Public Health Training Center (TPHTC) is one of 33 Public Health Training Centers across the nation. TPHTC is a collaborative effort among the Health Science Center's School of Public Health, the University of Texas School of Public Health, and the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center School of Rural Public Health. The Center's mission is to improve the state's public health system by strengthening the technical, scientific, managerial and leadership competencies and capabilities of the current and future public health workforce. For the last ten years, these collaborating institutions have been committed to addressing workforce training needs and strengthening this capacity within local health departments, hospitals and other health related organizations to effectively address the needs of the public health workforce. These trainings included live workshops, CD ROM programs, web-casts and videoconferences. The TPHTC envisions expanding its reach to include other arenas in which public health and health care professionals realize their work, including businesses, corporations, and grassroots organizations.

Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Centers (PERLC)

The CDC-funded Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Centers (PERLC) were established to enhance public health training and workforce. The learning centers serve in a national capacity for preparedness and response training and education needs of the U. S. public health workforce. The learning centers provide unique workforce development needs by offering assistance to nearby state, local, and tribal public health authorities.
The three schools of public health function as a consortium to provide preparedness and response training to the public health workforce through the Training and Education Collaborative System Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Center (TECS-PERLC). The TECS-PERLC partners design, develop, deliver, and evaluate trainings and education that support the mastery and performance of the Public Health Preparedness and Response Core Competencies and meet needs or gaps of state, regional, local, and tribal public health workforce.
