    May 11 all-day

Bam! Pow! Boom! Comics in the Library @ Willis Library | Denton | Texas | United States

If you didn’t know that comics are more than just super heroes, you haven’t been paying attention. From their origin in the political cartoons of the 18th century, to the golden age of sequential art, to manga and graphic novels, to the internet, comics of all sorts are experiencing a groundswell of scholarly and popular interest. This exhibit shares highlights from UNT Libraries unique holdings of comics, graphic novels, and related materials. And don’t worry, there will be plenty of super heroes included!

Curated by Dr. Spencer Keralis and Dr. John Martin, UNT Libraries, with contributions from our Government Documents repository, the Texas Fashion Collection, the UNT Music Library, and Special Collections.

The Lost Generation: WWI Poetry Selected from the Donald Thomas War Poetry Collection
    @ UNT Willis Library

    May 11 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

    The Lost Generation

This exhibit explores the work of many “soldier poets,” from World War I, whose aesthetically rich and haunting verse often sits uncomfortably alongside popular ballads, songs and toasts that attempt to sustain, or gently mock, the romanticized ideals of heroic self-sacrifice for the nation’s glory. In between these opposed perspectives we find responses to the war, both critical and laudatory, from poets who did not enlist, including women on the home front and those in active service as nurses. To set these perspectives in context, we include sections on visual images of war, particularly photography and poets’ responses to this documentary technology, and retrospective collections that advocate for peace in the aftermath of the Great War and on the eve of World War II.
The exhibit can be viewed any time during our regular hours:
9am to 5pm Monday through Saturday
    January 15 – May 11, 2017
UNT Willis Library Room 437The exhibit can also be viewed any time through The Lost Generation: World War I Poetry online exhibit.Dr. John Peters, one of the curators of this exhibit, will present a lecture describing the effects of the war on England and Europe, as well as discussing a few of the poems featured in the exhibit. The lecture will be held:
    February 23, 2017
    UNT Willis Library Room 140
    4pm – 5pm

A reception and exhibit viewing will follow:
    February 23, 2017
    UNT Willis Library Room 437
    5pm – 7pm
    Refreshments will be served.
We recommend visitors to campus park in either the Highland Avenue or Union Circle parking garages. A campus map can be viewed here.

Join the Greater Denton Arts Council for Composite of the Soul, on view January 20 – June 3, 2017, Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, Free

Local Denton artists Justin Archer, Dan Black, and Erik Beruvides are joining together to curate a three-person, multi-disciplinary exhibition featuring recent works as well as custom installation pieces. Archer’s wooden sculptures, Black’s large-scale murals and Bereuvide’s A/V components will take over Festival Hall, as new pieces evolve and change over the four month span of the exhibition. The desire for these works is to demonstrate, through personal situations, that we are called to move forward with our lives; we should understand the past, yet strive to build and create a more sustainable future.

    truly, madly
@ Murchison Performing Arts Center, University of North Texas

    May 11 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

truly, madly @ Murchison Performing Arts Center, University of North Texas | Denton | Texas | United States

Each semester, the Greater Denton Arts Council collaborates with the University of North Texas’ College of Music and the Murchison Performing Arts Center to showcase and celebrate North Texas artists by exhibiting their works in the vast lobby leading to Margot & Bill Winspear Hall and the Lyric Theater at the Murchison Performing Arts Center.

truly, madly is a collection of collaborative photographs on exhibition starting on March 27th and ending May 19th!

truly, madly is feeling wholeheartedly however shallow or deep. In this series of collaborative photographs by Kasumi Chow and Desiree Espada, the artists construct single colorful frames of common objects juxtaposed by portraits of young women, teetering between anxiety and euphoria. The photographs are glazed with mild angst, impulse, and deliberately awkward situations. There is a vanitas-laden visual syntax at work. However, these contemporary still lifes are more visually succinct in their delivery than their predecessors. A lopped off pony tail stands on its own upon a bright yellow backdrop, chola-style nails offer fist-fulls of lifeless gelatinous gummy worms, a ring pop is cast off into a glass of champagne. These works are not about eternal preservation or nature morte, but rather about unapologetically living in the moment, where humor and sorrow intersect all in the same square.

Artwork courtesy of the artists and The Public Trust.

    THE MAGAZINE

    #DENTON: Where Original Meets Independent

    CVB LogoDenton.  Original.  Independent.

Mull it over for a minute.  Look at the image; think about the words.  What does it mean?  What is it saying?

This is our brand.  It conveys in a single image the essence of this place:  Denton, Texas.  Understanding our brand is the first step to understanding our vibe.  And tuning to our vibe is the key to unlocking your own uniquely-customized, Denton-centric adventure.

The word original is a broad application.  It’s more a description of spirit than physical attribute, though the spirit is manifested in the physical fabric of our city.  The creative energy fueled by our universities, arts community, music industry, small business community, the North Texas Horse Country – it drives originality.  Another example of our originality is our vibrant downtown.  It’s the real thing, no faux about it.  We hold fast to our history while progressively moving ahead.  We hold originality in high regard.

Independent is more of the same spirit and springs from the same attributes as original.  Consider our burgeoning music scene, for instance.  Denton is known around the world for the music movement that’s been organically evolving here for many years.  Interestingly, though, there is not a specific “Denton sound” that anyone can identify in a word.  That is the result of original and independent.  The sound is a combination of individual sounds where writers, musicians, poets and venues have their own messages, rhythms, tunes and atmospheres.  Listeners get the entire breadth, as varied or not as they choose.  And again, in the surrounding horse country, we have the most diverse equine population and disciplines in one area than anywhere else on Planet Earth.  That’s independent, and it results in a lively, energetic culture.

The weathered appearance of the brand is quite intentional.  Think about your favorite pair of jeans.  They’re likely a bit worn-looking, because they are your favorite.  They fit you perfectly, comfortably.  And they wouldn’t fit anyone else in just the same way.  Our brand says that’s how Denton fits too.

Denton is a place where people come to pursue their passions, and we’ve shared their dreams and journeys for more than 150 years.  You’ll see it in our year-round festivals, museums, galleries and shops.  You’ll taste it in the delectable art of local chefs and unique dining.  You’ll feel it in our vibe.

Welcome to Denton.  Now get ready for something different, an experience no other has had before, because this one is yours:  Original.  Independent.

Guests in Denton, like the 128,000 people who choose to live here, have something quite definitive in common: we all seek uniquely customized, Denton-centric adventures in our internationally acclaimed way-cool vibe. We call this vibe original, independent.

Original is a spirit manifested in the physical fabric of our city. It is creative energy fueled for the past 125 years by our universities, arts community, music industry, business community, the North Texas Horse Country and our vibrant, no-faux-about-it downtown square. We hold originality in high regard.
