Presentation Summary
“Terror upon terror overwhelms me. It sweeps away my resolution like the wind, and my hope of victory vanishes like a cloud. So now my soul is in turmoil, and misery has me daily in its grip. My night pain racks my bones, and there is a ceaseless throbbing in my veins. With violent force it seizes me and torments me” (JOB 30:15:17)
Job’s ancient lament does not seem exaggerated to patients who experience pain, whether from cancer, heart disease, post-severe burns, orthopedic injury and surgery, or any of the host of other causes. What often makes pain worse, is that both patients and physicians may feel it is more morally defensible to treat disease than to treat pain effectively. Even when pain is experienced by dying patients, there may be a real debate about treating such paint adequately – especially if to do so might shorten the patient’s life. Does patient autonomy include the right to make such decisions? Or for physicians to choose not to implement them? Is the obligation to treat pain an ethical obligation in patient care?
