Description
Earned value management is an analysis tool used to help program managers and their staffs identify and manage risks to prevent unnecessary delays to/cost overruns on acquisition programs. It also helps to determine program status required by upper level management. In order to effectively use this tool, it is important to have a firm grasp of key terminology, metrics, and scheduling principles. This course uses a combination of lecture and group exercises. Since EVM is not required for all acquisition programs, this course provides an opportunity for students to refresh their knowledge and skills related to key terms, metrics, and scheduling principles prior to attending EVM201.
Objectives
  • Define the basic elements of performance measurement
  • Describe how earned value management combines work scope, schedule, and resources
  • Explain in plain language the meaning of the five earned value variables: BCWS, BCWP, ACWP, BAC, and EAC
  • Identify the governing EVM policy and DoD implementation guidance
  • Explain in plain language the meaning of the SV, CV, and VAC earned value metrics
  • Recognize earned value variables SV and CV on EV graphs and Format 1 of the Contract Performance Report (CPR) or Integrated Program Management Report (IPMR)
  • Describe the purpose, steps and budget elements of the Performance Measurement Baseline (PMB) development process
--Describe content and purpose of the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
--Identify the elements and purpose of a control account
--Identify the relative desirability and risks associated with various earned value techniques
--Recall the relationship of budget to the performance measurement system
--Explain in plain language the meaning of and relationship of TAB, NCC, AUW, CBB, OTB, SLPP, CA, Planning Package, Work Package, UB, MR, and PMB
  • Calculate Earned Value Management Metrics using earned value data
  • Interpret and analyze trend charts
  • Target Attendees
Students required to take EVM201 who do not have an opportunity to maintain the concepts learned in EVM101.
