Description
There are items managed by the Department of Defense and the federal supply system that have a Shelf-Life (expiration date). Typical Shelf-Life items include food, medicines, batteries, paints, sealants, tires, chemicals, packaged petroleum products, hoses/belts, mission-critical o-rings, and Nuclear/Biological/Chemical equipment and clothing. Shelf-Life is the total period of time beginning with the date of manufacture, cure, assembly, or pack (subsistence only), that an item may remain in the combined wholesale (including manufacturer's) and retail storage systems, and still remain usable for issue and/or consumption by the end user. These items must be monitored, properly maintained and stored in order to maximize the item’s ready for issue capability.

The Shelf-Life modules within CLL 120 include an introduction, information on acquisition and procurement, integrated material management, receiving, storing and monitoring, material disposition, and the use of the Shelf-Life Extension System (SLES) located on the DoD Shelf-Life Program website.
