Description
Participate in an Action-Packed Week!

In the Engineering Management Workshop, DoD employees experience an accelerated process of a typical Department of Defense system acquisition - Model 5: Hybrid Program A (Hardware Dominant). Throughout the course of a week, participants are provided government furnished equipment (LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 kits) and must design, fabricate, and test a robotic vehicle that must meet specified performance requirements as identified in the contract. Teams must make changes to government furnished software code and develop new software code to meet certain requirements. Testing and integrating software into the hardware must be synchronized to meet the need for integration and developmental testing of the robotic vehicle. This workshop simulates the processes and situations DoD employees face in real life while on the job, where they are required to design, build, develop, integrate and test systems that meet specific DoD requirements.
Objectives
Participants form Integrated Product Teams and role play as a government employee or a contractor—allowing them to experience processes from all participant angles. Teams design and build a robotic vehicle that meets specific requirements, all while applying their knowledge of engineering, program management, testing, logistics and financial management. Throughout the workshop, participants are introduced to and practice various skills and competencies such as:

  • Systems Engineering
  • Project Management
  • Engineering Management and design
  • Software development
  • Risk management
  • Technical reviews and Audits
  • Cybersecurity
  • Developmental Testing
  • Configuration management

The final day culminates with the teams demonstrating the performance of their vehicle designs during a number of test events including trial runs around a complex obstacle course. The workshop concludes with a “source selection,” where team designs are evaluated based on performance, cost, producibility, and supportability. One team is declared the winner based on a best-value determination.
  • Target Attendees
This workshop is open to all DoD employees across all competencies (ENG, PM, TST, LOG, FM, etc). From intern to senior-level management, everyone benefits from this workshop and its collaborative, open-discussion environment.
