North American Cooperation on Energy Information (NACEI)

Overview

The Energy Secretaries and Minister from Canada, Mexico and the United States met in 2014 at the call of the North American Leaders to advance an agenda that expands the continent's leadership in energy, strengthens North American energy security, and supports shared economic prosperity and environmental performance. As part of this initiative, a trilateral memorandum of understanding (MOU) on energy information cooperation was signed in December 2014.

The trilateral MOU created an institutional framework for consultation and sharing publicly available information among the participants, for the purpose of ongoing dialogue, cooperation and deliverables on improved information and energy outlooks for the North American region. The areas of focus for the working group include:

  1. comparing, validating, and improving respective energy import and export information
  2. sharing publicly available geospatial information related to energy infrastructure
  3. exchanging views and information on projections of cross-border energy flows
  4. harmonizing terminology, concepts and definitions of energy products

The primary participating agencies include the Department of Natural Resources, Statistics Canada and the National Energy Board from Canada; the Secretaría de Energía (SENER) (Secretariat of Energy), Comisión Reguladora de Energía, Comisión Nacional de Hidrocarburos, Petróleos Mexicanos, Comisión Federal de Electricidad, Centro Nacional de Control de Gas Natural, Centro Nacional de Control de Energía and the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI) (National Institute of Statistics and Geography) from Mexico; and the Energy Information Administration (EIA) of the Department of Energy and the U.S. Census Bureau from the United States.
