Areas of Research Emphasis

The vision of NIDCR's Division of Intr​amural Research is to be world leaders in innovative science and training related to dental, oral and craniofacial health and disease.

Craniofacial Developmental, Cell and Matrix Biology​

Exploring fundamental questions concerning the mechanisms of tissue morphogenesis, cellular function, differentiation and cancer, with the goal of preventing and treating craniofacial disorders.

Epithelial and Salivary Gland Biology and Dysfunction

Investigating cellular, molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying developmnet, differentiation, and secretory physiology with the aim to repair and regenerate function.

​Immunology and Inflammation

Research on mucosal immunology, oral inflammatory diseases and immune tolerance/autoimmunity​.

Sensory Biology

Investigating fundamental mechanisms of sensation including taste, somatosensation and pain, while developing novel strategies to control pain.



Skeletal Biology​

Development and maintenance of skeletal tissues, defined as teeth, bone, cartilage, their associated tissues, whith emphasis on the cells, genes, matrix-associated macromolecules and related proteases of these tissues.

The NIH Intramural Research Program conducts distinctive, high-risk, high-impact laboratory, clinical and population-based research in a unique environment, where it also trains a diverse population of outstanding future researchers.​

Within the larger NIH community, the NIDCR Division of Intramural Research supports outstanding basic, translational and clinical research and training to advance our understanding of biological processes relevant to dental, oral, and craniofacial health.

We accomplish our mission by:

  • ​Performing basic and clinical research that emphasizes high quality and relevance to health
  • Training the next generation of researchers in our laboratories and clinic, and
  • Translating the results of our research through publications and technology transfer.
