Acquisition Update: Ex-Coast Guard Cutter Delivers Disaster Aid to Philippines

The former Coast Guard Cutter Jarvis delivered 40 tons of Typhoon Haiyan disaster aid to Manila, Philippines, Nov. 29, 2013, during the ship’s initial voyage since being transferred to the Bangladesh navy earlier this year. After Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines last month, the Coast Guard provided logistics support in Guam to load food, clothing, medicine and other humanitarian items donated by the Bangladesh government.
The Coast Guard decommissioned Jarvis Oct. 2, 2012, and transferred it to the Bangladesh navy May 23, 2013. Re-christened as Somudra Joy, the ship is the largest in the Bangladesh navy. After five months of refit and crew training, Somudra Joy departed Alameda, Calif., on Oct. 26 making port calls in San Diego, Calif.; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Guam and Manila.
Somudra Joy arrived in its new home port of Chittagong, Bangladesh, Dec. 13 and will be commissioned into service later this month.
The Coast Guard’s Office of International Acquisition manages transfers of excess decommissioned assets under the Excess Defense Article program and acquires new assets for foreign governments through the Foreign Military Sales program. Both programs promote stability by helping friendly governments exercise maritime sovereignty.
Since 1997, the Coast Guard has conducted more than $750 million in EDA/FMS transactions and avoided more than $70 million in disposal costs. To date, the Coast Guard has delivered 280 new-procurement boats and aircraft and 120 excess boats and cutters. Last month, the Office of International Acquisition delivered its 400th asset, a new response boat, to the Government of Seychelles.
