Newest Coast Guard Cutter Takes To Sea

Newest National Security Cutter In Boston For Coast Guard’s 225th Anniversary

The Coast Guard’s fifth national security cutter, James, arrived in Boston as the Coast Guard celebrates 225 years of service to the nation. The cutter, named after renowned lifesaver and Coast Guard legend Joshua James, will remain in Boston for its Aug. 8 commissioning – about five miles away from its namesake’s hometown of Hull, Massachusetts – before heading to its home port of Charleston, South Carolina. The NSCs provide better seakeeping, higher sustained transit speeds and greater endurance and range than the 1960s-vintage high endurance cutters they replace.
