Feb 16, 2017    The American Community Survey (ACS) & Your Community by the Numbers

Description: In this webinar you will learn the basics of the American Community Survey (ACS) and receive an illustration of various easy-to-use data tools to retrieve data on your community. Data from the ACS provides statistics on more than 40 social, economic and housing topics for U.S. communities nationwide. By pooling multiple years of data, the ACS is able to produce a rolling sample of estimates for cities, towns, counties and other geographies, regardless of their population size.

Description: This webinar explains some basic cartographic techniques for mapping quantitative data for non-cartographers. It shows how to find statistics in American Factfinder then how to use the AFF mapping feature to map ACS data statistics, and how to use the legend tools to get a better graphic and influence the way others perceive your data. This course explores four choropleth mapping classification methods: Jenks, Equal Interval, Self-defined and Quantile.

Description: The American Community Survey (ACS) Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files show untabulated population and housing unit records with individual response information. For example, they show how respondents answered questions on educational attainment, occupation, place of work, housing value, and so forth. In this webinar, we will discuss foundational aspects of working with the ACS PUMS files, including the organization of the files, the confidentiality of the files, accessing the data, geographic availability, and the PUMS documentation.

Description: Margins of error (MOE) are provided for every American Community Survey (ACS) estimate. In this webinar, we will explain MOEs, and why they are important. The webinar also will cover how to use MOEs for statistical testing, a demonstration of the statistical testing tool, how to approximate the MOE for an estimate, information on the variance replicate tables, and how to locate online resources for further information.

May 11, 2017    Emergency Planning and Response with Census Bureau Data

Description: Join us during National Hurricane Preparedness Week to learn how to plan and respond to emergencies using Census Bureau data. In this session, you will learn how to access statistics for custom geographies using free online data tools: OnTheMap for Emergency Management, OnTheMap, and American FactFinder. Our data allow you to analyze an area’s potential:

  • Physical vulnerability (e.g. year housing structures were built, mobile homes, etc.)
  • Economic vulnerability (e.g. total workers, industry sectors, earnings, etc.)
  • Social vulnerability (e.g. disability status, age, vehicle access, etc.)

Nov 08, 2017    Accessing American Community Survey Data for Detailed Population Group

Description: Every five years, the U.S. Census Bureau releases products for detailed population groups. Learn how to access data for American Indian and Alaska Natives (AIAN) tribes, as well as detailed race, Hispanic origin, tribal, and ancestry populations using the newly released 2011-2015 ACS 5-year Selected Population Tables and AIAN Tables.
