Import prices from China decrease 1.7 percent over the year ending January 2017

Prices for imports from China fell 0.1 percent in January, after recording no change in December and fell 1.7 percent over the past 12 months. The price index for imports from China has not recorded a monthly increase since the index rose 0.1 percent in December 2014.

192 metropolitan areas had jobless rates below U.S. rate of 4.5 percent in December 2016
In December 2016, a total of 192 areas had jobless rates below the U.S. rate of 4.5 percent, 186 areas had rates above it, and 9 areas had rates equal to that of the nation. In December, Ames, Iowa, and Burlington-South Burlington, Vermont, had the lowest unemployment rates, 2.1 percent each. El Centro, California, and Yuma, Arizona, had the highest unemployment rates, 18.8 percent and 15.3 percent, respectively.

Employment up in 49 of the 51 largest metro areas, December 2015 to December 2016
From December 2015 to December 2016, nonfarm employment rose in 49 of the 51 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of 1 million or more, and fell in Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, Wisconsin (-0.5 percent), and Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, Virginia-North Carolina (-0.4 percent).

Unit labor costs for nonfarm business increase 1.9 percent during 2016
During 2016, unit labor costs in the nonfarm business sector increased 1.9 percent, as hourly compensation increased 2.9 percent and labor productivity (output per hour) increased 1.0 percent. Since the end of 2006, unit labor costs for nonfarm business increased 12.7 percent, as hourly compensation grew 27.3 percent and labor productivity increased 13.0 percent.

Union membership rate 10.7 percent in 2016
The union membership rate—the percentage of wage and salary workers who are members of unions—was 10.7 percent in 2016, down 0.4 percentage point from 2015. In 1983, the first year for which comparable data are available, the union membership rate was 20.1 percent.
