MHS GENESIS, Military Health System Electronic Health Record
I am very excited about the introduction of MHS GENESIS, our integrated electronic health record (EHR). I believe this critical enterprise tool will help us improve the quality of care we provide to our uniformed heroes (past and present) and their families. For this reason, I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the key benefits MHS GENESIS will deliver to patients:
- Moves patient information into the hands of people who need it: MHS GENESIS enables the different clinicians caring for a patient to view all of the medications, problems, procedures and social histories across the range of roles and venues, including Theater care. This includes a shared view of problems, medications and allergies with the dental solution for MHS GENESIS.
- Improves health record completeness to enable providers to make better decisions: Clinicians share one source of truth that allows each party full access to a patient’s medical history rather than a limited snapshot-type view of each visit. When all providers can share a patient’s health information via MHS GENESIS, each one has access to more accurate and up-to-date information about a patient and his/her care. This enables our providers to make the best decisions about patient care for standard tasks and in emergency situations.
- Reduces redundancies and costs: One clinician may order duplicate lab or radiology orders, or medical tests if the original results are not readily available. With MHS GENESIS, all providers caring for a patient will have access to all of the test results and records at once, reducing the potential for unnecessary repeat tests. Additionally health maintenance requirements such as immunizations and other expectations will be shared across venues. For example, information about flu shots or pneumovax administered to patients at a hospital will be available at other locations.
- Improves access to health records for both beneficiaries and providers: Clinical staff can view documentation such as: procedures, history and physical, discharge, operative notes and office notes from MHS GENESIS instead of searching for this information in several different sources.
I am excited for the opportunity to deliver improved patient care with higher levels of quality and safety, and thank you for your interest and support of MHS GENESIS. I am proud to serve with you as we, together, proceed toward a transformation that places the patient at the center of care.
