Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) is defined in Joint Publication 1-02 as:
"The impact of the electromagnetic environment upon the operational capability of military forces, equipment, systems, and platforms. It encompasses all electromagnetic disciplines, including electromagnetic compatibility/electromagnetic interference; electromagnetic vulnerability; electromagnetic pulse; electronic protection, hazards of electromagnetic radiation to personnel, ordnance, and volatile materials; and natural phenomena effects of lightning and p-static."
E3 and Spectrum Engineering Division (JSC/J5) provides radio frequency (RF) engineering support services to ensure optimal electromagnetic environmental effects (E3) control and spectrum supportability (SS) of military systems and platforms throughout their acquisition life-cycle, and maintains expertise in support of the DoD acquisition and operational communities for policy development, test and evaluation, engineering analysis and risk assessments, hazards of electromagnetic radiation to ordnance (HERO), E3 standards, and E3/SS education and outreach.
