Item Unique Identification, or IUID, is a DoD strategic imperative. The requirement is based on the value proposition that UID of items provides a joint data capability that enables item tracking in DoD business systems and provides reliable and accurate data for management, financial accountability and asset management purposes.
Item Unique Identification (UID) is the set of data for tangible assets that is globally unique and unambiguous, ensures data integrity and data quality throughout life, and supports multi-faceted business applications and users. UID is NOT synonymous with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).

Wide Area Work Flow-Receipts and Acceptance (WAWF-RA) is a paperless contracting DoD-wide application designed to eliminate paper from the invoice, receipt and acceptance process in the contracting lifecycle. The goal is to enable authorized Defense contractors and DoD personnel the ability to create invoices and receiving reports and access contract related documents. When a contractor ships items, IUID data must be included in the electronic shipment notification as the contract specifies and as the program manager requests. WAWF has been enhanced to process the IUID data for fixed price contracts. A number of solutions for direct submission have been developed to accept IUID data for items that have been accepted by the Government in those cases where the vendor cannot use WAWF for IUID (cost type contracts or not all stakeholders ready to use WAWF).
