Water, Air & Soil

Water, Air & Soil research provides the scientific basis and specialized tools to inform natural resource managers and landowners about the likely effects of their decisions. These decisions often involve tradeoffs among the various components of the Nation’s water, air, and soil resources on forests and rangelands and societal values.

With our strong multidisciplinary foundation and long-term data sets, Forest Service R&D is well positioned to build on 100 years of basic and applied research to better understand the interactions of changing land uses, weather patterns, and pollution levels on our Nation’s forests and rangelands and their water, air, and soil resources. Moreover, our history of science-management partnerships provides a sound set of experience for helping land owners and land managers make decisions for wild, managed, rural, and urbanized lands.
