Since November 2011, EPA has assessed 14 former dump sites, previously identified by state agencies, as part of an investigation into potential sources of contamination in eastern Sandusky County, Ohio. EPA also established a hotline for members of the community to offer information about possible sites with environmental contamination. The Agency evaluated the 90 reports received through the hotline.
In June 2012, EPA published reports on the 14 former dump sites previously identified by state agencies. Based on the assessments and information EPA obtained, the Agency determined that removal action was not warranted at those 14 sites. In addition, EPA conducted site assessments at three additional properties based on information received through the hotline: the "Shaw Road site" (a residential property on the west side of Clyde in rural Sandusky County), the former Clyde Paint and Supply Co. site and the former Whirlpool Park site.
- In May 2013, an assessment began at the former Whirlpool Park property under EPA oversight. The assessment ended in June 2013.
- In December 2012, EPA shared initial results of the completed assessments with a fact sheet and continued community outreach.
- In November 2012, EPA removed soil contaminated with lead, chromium and xylene from the site of the former Clyde Paint and Supply Co.
- In October 2012, EPA removed lead-contaminated soil and empty drums that were dumped years ago at the Shaw Road site.
- In June 2012, EPA sampled the former Whirlpool Park property and found elevated levels of PCBs more than six feet below ground. This led to a decision to have a full assessment of the property performed by Whirlpool Corp., the former property owner, under EPA oversight.
January 2016 Update for former Whirlpool Park property
Under EPA oversight, Whirlpool Corporation has completed the cleanup of soil contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from the former Whirlpool Park in Green Springs, Sandusky County, Ohio.
Whirlpool and the current property owner negotiated an access agreement to the property in January 2015 to allow the cleanup to take place. Whirlpool submitted a PCB remediation work plan to EPA in March 2015.
In April 2015, EPA issued an approval to Whirlpool for the planned cleanup and disposal of PCB waste, which was located below the surface.
During the summer and fall of 2015, Whirlpool removed approximately 12,418 tons of waste contaminated with PCBs and 7,272 tons of non-PCB waste from an area of approximately 1.45 acres at the property.
Post-remediation verification sampling of the PCB cleanup site was completed in December 2015.
A final cleanup report documenting the work done is expected to be submitted to EPA in February 2016.
August 2013 Update for former Whirlpool Park propertyIn May, 2013 Whirlpool Corporation began conducting an assessment at the former Whirlpool Park property in Green Springs, Sandusky County, Ohio. This site assessment was conducted under EPA oversight and was completed in June 2013. EPA collected approximately 5% of the total number of samples that were collected by Whirlpool’s contractor for independent analysis.
Analytical results from the samples collected by EPA are presented in the report titled Interim Site Assessment Report for the Whirlpool Park Site (PDF) (657 pp, 7.57MB). Observations made durinAg the site assessment are also presented in the report. This report does not present any conclusions or remedial recommendations. Once the final report from Whirlpool’s contractor is received, EPA will review their report including the analytical data and will make conclusions and recommendations at that time.
