The Energy Department is helping California address severe drought conditions by supporting their Appliance Efficiency Program which lowers flow rates for faucets and showerheads as well as helps the state maintain a nearly constant level of electricity consumption per capita.

Energy Department financial aid to improve energy efficiency and renewable energy is especially critical in Alaska because harsh climate and the enormity of the state complicates fuel and electricity distribution, resulting in some of the highest energy prices in the country. A portion of Energy Department aid to Alaska is helping with the development and testing of building energy monitoring software to increase a building efficiency and performance. The software is already being widely applied in Alaskan Native villages, cutting energy costs and providing other vital services.

Financial support from the U.S. Department of Energy to Oregon's state energy office has helped the state support energy retrofits for several schools and allowed seven classrooms -- previously left vacant due to a lack of heating -- to open for students to use. The renovations revitalized a school district, while boosting energy efficiency.

The state park system across the U.S. is critical to historic preservation, natural history, wildlife conservation, and education. The Energy Department plays an important role in supporting state parks thought clean energy investment.

The Energy Department is continuing partnerships with state and local governments to advance efficiency in both energy and water use. One way of doing this is by implementing Energy Savings Performance Contracting (ESPC), an approach to making improvements that reduce energy and water use and increase operational efficiency without upfront costs.

The Energy Department announced today the results of a major national evaluation during a typical year in the State Energy Program (SEP) operations, as well as during the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) period. The results reaffirm the Energy Department's long-standing commitment to drive economic development and reduce carbon emissions at the state level. 

The purpose of the study was to develop independent key outcomes for program year 2008 and the ARRA time period from 2009–2013.

As the school year begins anew across the nation, Rhode Island is at the frontier of energy education, offering a state-of-the-art curriculum in many of its schools. With the help of funds from the Energy Department’s State Energy Program, the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources continues its partnership with the nonprofit National Energy Education Development Project (NEED) to provide energy education materials to schools and organize workshops to train teachers on energy curricula.

With help from the State Energy Program, the Nevada Governor's Office of Energy and the local utility NV Energy were able to create the Electric Highway joint initiative to connect the two major urban centers in the state, Las Vegas and Reno, and install charging stations along the route.

Tennessee’s Office of Energy Programs (OEP) is working to wipe out energy vampires and phantom loads with its EDGE project, which could serve as a model for other energy efficiency projects throughout the country. Using Recovery Act funds made available by the Energy Department’s State Energy Program, OEP distributed Kill-A-Watt® Meters to program participants to measure “in use” and “standby power” of at least five of their devices or appliances at home or work.
