The National Elk Refuge has one of the largest volunteer programs in the U.S.Fish & Wildlife Service's Mountain-Prairie region. A variety of  opportunities are available year-round to join the National Elk Refuge team of volunteers.

The Grand Teton Association is a nonprofit cooperating association that operates a sales outlet in the Jackson Hole & Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center. Proceeds from the bookstore sales are used to support educational, interpretive, and research projects on the National Elk Refuge.

The Federal planning process includes opportunities for public comment when an Environmental Assessment (EA) or other planning document is developed. The refuge's Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP) was available for public comment from September 9 through October 24, 2014. The CCP was approved on September 18, 2015 and is in the final stages of preparation. More information on the plan will be provided in a notice of availability to be published in the Federal Register when the Final CCP is available.

The refuge promotes the voluntary use of non-lead ammunition, allowing hunters a unique opportunity to maintain support for hunting programs by demonstrating a commitment to safe, quality hunting practices that will benefit the long-term conservation of wildlife.
