NRCS helps America's farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners conserve the nation's soil, water, air, plants, and animals. NRCS works with both federal and state agencies to recognize the importance of plant and animal populations and the need to protect them from threats that could lead to their extinction.
Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection - The Connecticut Endangered Species Act, was passed in 1989. The overall goal of the legislation is to conserve, protect, restore and enhance any endangered or threatened species and their essential habitat. Species are listed according to their level of risk, and their status is reviewed every five years.
Fish & Wildlife Service - The Endangered Species Program in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the federal program responsible for administering the Endangered Species Act. The purpose of the ESA is to protect and recover imperiled species and the ecosystems upon which they depend. As of September 2012, the Endangered Species Act protects 1400 domestic species and 614 foreign species. They work with many partners to prevent species from going extinct, help stabilize species populations and protect important habitat, and ultimately help those species increase their population size and reduce the threats to their existence so that they can be removed from ESA protection.
The northern long-eared bat is one of the species of bats most impacted by the disease white-nose syndrome. Due to declines caused by white-nose syndrome as well as continued spread of the disease, the northern long-eared bat will now receive protection as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. The Fish & Wildlife Service proposed the northern long-eared bat as endangered in October 2013. The listing will become effective May 4, 2015, 30 days after publication of the final listing determination in the Federal Register. Also effective that day is an interim 4(d) rule that provides flexibility to landowners, land managers, government agencies and others as they conduct activities in northern long-eared bat habitat.
